Letter to students: Welcome to the first day of class!

Dear Students,

Welcome to the first day of Fall 2019 classes! I have enjoyed meeting many of you during move-in, in the classroom, and around campus, and I look forward to meeting more of you throughout the academic year.

Whether you just arrived at Mason or are on the cusp of graduation, please make the most of the amazing opportunities here at one of the leading public research universities in the nation. We have researchers studying the effects of climate change, and how to beat the opioid crisis. We have students and professors building satellites together, and writing plays and video games. We have scholars taking advantage of our proximity to the nation’s capital to engage with policymakers impacting the world. And we have you, the largest, most diverse, and most incredible student body in the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond!

Please know that I, and the entire university administration, faculty and staff, are laser-focused on your success. We are working, for instance, on the Mason Student Experience Redesign Project to ensure smoother student interactions with services such as enrollment, registration, and housing. We are also working to ensure all students have opportunities to be part of Mason Impact, experiential learning through Research and Creative Activities, Community Engagement and Civic Learning, Entrepreneurship, and Global Activities.

Please help us help you succeed here at Mason. We are not perfect – as evidenced by the extremely unfortunate false alert we experienced on campus last week. But we are always striving to do our best. Take advantage of the many resources available – your faculty, student services, academic supports, and beyond. And please reach out to my colleagues and me in Merten Hall with your thoughts and suggestions on how we can make your Mason experience even better.

I hope you are as eager to start the semester as I am. Let’s work together to make this a terrific year at Mason!

Sincerely,

Anne Holton
