I am pleased to announce that George Mason University is commencing its next round of periodic strategic planning. As we prepare for our 50th anniversary as an independent institution, it is time to reflect on the university we have become and the direction we should chart for our next 50 years. I’ve asked Dr. Ken Walsh, Professor in Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering and Vice President for Strategic Initiatives/Chief of Staff, to lead us in this new strategic planning effort.

The objective of this process will be to develop an actionable, five-year strategic plan that affirms our vision and mission and solidifies the direction for Mason through targeted priorities, strategies, and actions. The foundation of this plan will be driven by the feedback we receive from you, our stakeholders, as we strive to make this an inclusive process that considers diverse perspectives from within and around the Mason community. These insights are critical in shaping our future and each member of the Mason community will have the opportunity to share their views and ideas on the direction of our university via interviews, focus groups, town halls, and surveys.  

In September 2021, Attain Partners introduced a kickoff presentation for the Mason Strategic Planning Initiative. The objectives of the initiative will be to articulate the vision and mission of Mason, document our direction based on priorities, strategies and actions, and create a measurement framework that allows us to objectively measure our success.

To help facilitate this effort, we have engaged Attain Partners, a local consulting firm, which will work closely with our established Steering Committee, Working Group, and the Mason community to gather feedback from leaders, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and others to help inform the strategic direction of the university. In addition, as we examine the best articulation of Mason’s vision and mission, we will collaborate with the ongoing brand refresh exercise led by the Office of Communications and Marketing.
